Dóra Anna Szepesi

I do not like guided tours, I always feel that they are trying to force an opinion on me and I have to admit to myself that I feel the same way about art magazine columns as well.

Oftentimes they try to tell us what we should feel and think regarding an exhibition. I doubt that visual art should be about words, as it is often unnecessary to explain what you have to look at and see.

This is why it almost always makes me flustered when I am asked about my works. I makes me feel as if I have to find some kind of higher purpose for them that explains the whys, because just getting lost in the mindset of creation is not enough, especially nowadays when analysis and explanation are an important part of self-marketing, which is almost inevitable for achieving greater success. When I think about my works and my whys, the only thing that comes to mind is that I would like to get to know, show and embrace myself more and more.

This is a big enough task for me, I’m a difficult case. Of course I am interested in shapes, colours, techniques, maybe even philosophical issues as well, but all these are all secondary. In conclusion, perhaps I can add a piece of wisdom that an acquaintance of mine photographed scrawled on a railing somewhere, "Art absorbs stupidity."
